"I am incredibly proud of my record of standing up for the people of Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton. I will continue to be a vocal champion in Parliament for my constituents." Paula Sherriff
Paula Sherriff

Paula Sherriff was elected Labour MP for Dewsbury in May 2015. She was re-elected on 8 June 2017 to continue her work as a vocal champion in Parliament for the people of Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton.

Appointed Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Social Care in January 2018, Paula is part of Jonathan Ashworth’s Health and Social Care Team, working with Shadow Cabinet Minister Barbara Keeley to hold the Government to account over their failing policies on mental health and social care.

Campaigning for change

After leaving school at the age of 18, Paula began working for the Police in a Victim Support role. She was proud to receive a Judge’s commendation for work she undertook supporting victims of sexual abuse. After nearly a decade in the Police Service, Paula joined the NHS, working in a front line role in Community Healthcare provision until being elected MP for Dewsbury constituency.

Seeing the damage that the Tory-led Government is doing to the NHS –  one of our country’s proudest achievements –  on a daily basis was a key factor in Paula’s decision to join the Labour Party. She was further motivated by seeing the impact of poverty and inequality on people’s lives and on communities and her background in public service has demonstrated how vital investment can tackle these issues.

Paula is passionate about the provision and delivery of high quality, local healthcare and is active on many local healthcare campaigns including the ‘Save Dewsbury Hospital’ and ‘Hands Off HRI’ campaigns. Paula is particularly concerned about the increasing privatisation of NHS services and has campaigned locally and nationally for a fully renationalised NHS.

In March 2016, after a long fought campaign, the announcement was made that the tampon tax would finally be scrapped. Paula became the first backbench MP in Parliamentary history to have had an amendment to a Budget resolution successfully adopted. Both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Labour Party commended her work on the issue.

A strong voice for local people

Paula is committed to representing constituents, and being a strong voice for them both in Westminster and in the local area – she is a strong opponent of MPs having second jobs and Paula will continue to be 100% dedicated to working for the people of Dewsbury, Mirfield, Kirkburton and Denby Dale. Paula has pledged that she will not take any other employment or directorship as your elected MP.
